Seattle’s Eastside Class of 2027

Conrad Berger

Bassist, bandleader, and soon-to-be supply chain student. I like figuring out how things move — a groove, a bus route, a product on its way to a shelf.

Hi, I’m Conrad.

Skill doesn’t transfer. Process does.

— the thing I keep relearning

I’m a senior planning to study supply chain and operations management. That might sound like a left turn for a musician, but it’s the same instinct: I like understanding how a system works, then making it run a little better.

Most of what I know I taught myself — electric bass, Logic Pro, Final Cut, and how to write an email to someone who has no reason to answer. Each time, the specific skill mattered less than learning how to learn it.

I grew up speaking English and German, I get everywhere by bus, and I’ve been teaching in one form or another since I was thirteen: music theory to younger singers, an outdoor preschool in every kind of weather, and two years of tutoring the same student.

The band, the bass, and the first record.

Jazz-funk quartet · founded 2025

The Prism

Drums, piano, sax, and me on bass. I started the band after meeting most of its members at CWU Jazz Camp, and I do the booking — finding gigs, arranging them, and getting four schedules to line up. We write originals, busk, and play around the Seattle area.

Our first album, The Beginning, is six jazz standards recorded at our very first rehearsal and released on Conrecords, my own label imprint.

Origin story

The wrong bass

In seventh grade my dad took me to see Marcus Miller, and I wanted that tone. It lives in a Jazz bass; I had a Precision. Nobody told me, so I spent the next year chasing it with my hands. The wrong bass made me a technical player.

Four signatures

The Stingray

Bought with my own money, and signed by Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Cory Wong, and Yohannes Tona. Every signature has its own story.

Since 2017

Columbia Choirs

Nine years with the same choir, including performances in San Francisco and Portland.

Teaching, mostly.

Since I was thirteen I’ve almost always been teaching something to someone. Here’s the short version.

  1. 2024 — 2026

    Private tutor Self-employed

One student, two school years. Writing, math, and science, with study strategies built around how they actually learn.

  2. 2024 — now

    Co-founder Ensemble Club

A school club that brings student musicians to audiences outside the band program.

  3. Summers 2023 & 2024

Assistant outdoor preschool teacher Tiny Treks, Redmond

Four and a half hours a day outside in all weather, sometimes running the group on my own. I was fourteen the first summer.

  4. 2022 — 2024

    Teaching assistant Columbia Choirs

Taught music theory to elementary-age singers and spent a week as a summer camp counselor.

Small stories that don’t fit anywhere else.

I cold-emailed NASA.

In eighth grade, for a National History Day documentary about Sputnik, I tracked down a NASA archivist’s address and asked for help. I got a yes, and the project made it to state.

I did the math on busking.

Before The Prism played on the street, I compared the rules in three cities. Free-but-scheduled lost to a $175 yearly permit that needs no notice — the only thing that works with four teenagers’ calendars. Kirkland won.

I’m the family route planner.

I get everywhere by bus, and I can usually tell you where yours is right now. Some of the most interesting people I’ve met, I met on a bus.

I learned editing on an old MacBook.

Logic Pro and Final Cut, no classes, no finished tutorial series — badly at first, then not badly. Most of my Instagram is what came out of it.
